Sonoma’s small branch down in Glebe is fortuitously positioned across the road from a leafy park, which happily alleviates the intimate space’s overcrowding issue (a frustrating situation for loaf-dealers and carbohydrate addicts alike). Among the pastry drawcards here are the chocolate croissants, various fruit Danishes and the banana bread that has the distinct taste of over-ripened fruit, exactly as it should. And while most bakeries will break your heart with delectable cakes and pastries but disappointing coffee, this one turns out a very respectable Single Origin brew.

Offerings such as ricotta and honey on toast and the simply marvellous miche sandwiches use the Sonoma breads as the perfect platform for other flavours, making a compelling case for taking a loaf home with you in the process.

The Sonoma Bakeries maintain a truly impressive range of bread made available on a daily basis; the regular country white sourdough has the right balance between firmness and chewiness, while the soy and linseed, kalamata olive and wholemeal polenta loaves are choices just as favourable. An alternative is the honey spice muesli – an aromatic, nutty, crunchy combination that actually makes a credible excuse to stray from the bread.
