Skittle Lane takes its name from the adjacent laneway, a historic site that was once used as a bowling alley for sailors and soldiers. Local historians have made note of the laneway as a place of “nefarious” activities. Nowadays, it’s coffee that’s the main event at Skittle Lane.
The cafe’s own seasonal blend is a full-bodied, well-balanced espresso with notes of vanilla and cocoa. Due to a lack of space, it’s roasted off-site. A selection of single origins rotate for espresso and filter, and a pour-over bar gives filter-loving customers a more personalised coffee experience.
Owners Jodie Foster and Dean Wooding blend hospitality and coffee know-how with experience in construction, sales and marketing, and interior design. They used their combined expertise for the fit-out, which is minimalist and clean. It makes the most of the original, dramatic bay windows that pour soft city light into the space.
On the menu is a selection of quick, easy bites for fast-paced city dwellers – Brewtown’s famous Brewnuts on Fridays, croissants via Penny Fours, a New York–inspired toastie selection, and tartine-style sandwiches with sliced egg, truffle oil and shaved parmesan.
Skittle Lane also partnered with ChuChu ceramics to produce its own tumbler and plate range, which is on sale in the cafe.
