Owners Aydin and Fiona Kumral (formerly of Redfern’s Appetite Cafe) have combined their love of coffee and design to create a vibrant little space opposite the Hayden Orpheum cinema. It serves sandwiches and their signature blend of coffee, Ammo, roasted locally on the Lower North Shore.

The venue may be tight, but it’s far from poky thanks to some intelligent design choices. Colourful industrial-style steel stools make up the seating, which is offset by an enormous concrete barista bench, hand-printed wallpaper and a vertical garden on one wall. Breakfast is served all day and includes easy on-the-go choices, such as a bacon-and-egg on a brioche roll; cheese toasties on sourdough; or smashed avocado with roasted tomatoes and marinated fetta on sourdough. For lunch, nearby nine-to-fivers come here for salads and sandwiches, including the chiko roll of poached chicken, walnuts, celery, herbs and mayo served on a grande roll; the ploughman’s lunch; or the turka with Turkish sausage, salami, cheese, tomato, pickled chillies on toasted sourdough.
