Shenkin Surry Hills
The fourth Shenkin cafe (and the first outside the inner west) shares the trademark home-style Israeli food, well-made coffee and warmth from the owners – brothers Din and Bar Haikin and their father, Arie.
The dishes that define Shenkin reappear here – shakshouka; sabih with smoky eggplant and boiled egg; falafel with a thick, crunchy outer layer; and smooth, rich hummus. All the recipes consider the Australian and Israeli palate and try to combine them.
The cafe will serves Israeli wines and beers, plus beers from Young Henrys. Arak, an aniseed-flavoured spirit commonly imbibed in Israel will be modified for Australian tastes. If you’re brave, ask for a shot and impress the owners.
