Located at the bustling Bronte Road entrance to Westfield Bondi Junction, Public looks like it could have been taken out of today’s Brooklyn; all exposed brick and stylised stainless steel, with a polished communal bench. The menu is refreshingly unembellished by trendy trickery, and the service brisk and no-nonsense.
Public Espresso provides fresh, market-sourced produce for three sittings: breakfast, lunch and evening supper. The breakfast menu is coloured by flourishes of innovation (a ‘morning’ bruschetta, and breakfast burger), and eschews trends in favour of classics done well. Single-origin coffee by de Gabriel and Hillbilly cider seal the deal, plus a curated wine list accompanies contemporary Australian share plates in the evenings.
The décor’s understated, luxe vibe delivers on the Brooklyn feel, too. The industrial light fixtures were sourced from Melbourne, but for the most part, the fit-out was completed in-house, including a recycled brick feature wall that houses the luminous letters that announce Public to passers-by.
