Prato Café & Diner
Prato is the second instalment by Brazilian-born barista Danny Acioli and chef Brock Coffey (formerly of Rockpool Bar & Grill), the team behind Drummoyne’s café Copo. Residing in the community hall of the former Abbotsford Nestlé factory site, the heritage-listed building illuminates a history of Sydney that is foreign to many. On warmer days, the polished verandah with alfresco seating provides idyllic views of the surrounding gardens.
The open kitchen decorated with hanging pot plants features an in-house smoker in which the team prepares their own smoked goods including bacon, speck and trout. The kitchen prepares almost everything onsite, including cakes (chocolate ricotta tart, caramel date slice and orange blossom snowballs) and pickles.
The South American-inspired menu invigorates breakfast dining, with generously portioned plates of fried lentils and smoked ham, and not to be missed applewood smoked bacon and egg roll. Coffey’s signature smoked fish pie is the highlight of lunch, and there are lighter options of delicious salads that can be served with house-smoked chicken.
