With no signage and only the buzz and chatter of the CBD workforce inside, it’s easy to walk by Palomino Espresso without noticing it’s even there. Inspired by her family’s establishments, owner Liesel Schmidt set out to open her first cafe earlier in 2012.
Surrounded by recycled wood benches and burnt orange tiles, Schmidt prepares trays of chunky sweet and savoury muffins on-site each morning, changing daily from raspberry and coconut to pumpkin, spinach and fetta. A favourite amongst many is the apple, date and walnut loaf served with a generous spoonful of ricotta, honey and pomegranate. The sweet treats, like all food here, are made on-site including Schmidt’s mother’s individual carrot cakes and Belgium brownies made from Callebaut chocolate. Lunch picks include Brasserie Bread sandwiches with pulled pork and coleslaw, braised beef and vegetable pies and vegetarian quiches straight from the oven.
The coffee here is Morgan’s Handcrafted blend, served aromatic and smooth. For serious drinkers, the Tuesday tasting session is held on-site from 2pm to 3pm, offering single origin brewing techniques including the cold drip experience, where coffee is served iced with maple syrup and/or brown sugar.
