The Little Kitchen

Are you dreaming of mother England? Or maybe you just really crave some kedgeree and a full English on a bleary-eyed Sunday morning? Head to The Little Kitchen, just minutes from the beach. Husband and wife owners Neil and Amy Thompson previously worked at the Four in Hand Hotel, The Paddington Arms Hotel (just him) and Aria Restaurant (just her).

The Little Kitchen has a hearty dose of Neil's British background in it, fused with Australian charm. The fit-out, inspired by classic London institutions such as the pie-and-mash shop, features shelving made of 200-year-old pine, whitewashed wooden panelling and handmade timber tables. Australian natives in jam jars add a touch of Coogee.

The menu is similarly cross-cultural. There’s kedgeree with smoked cod on the breakfast menu as well as some local classics such as avocado on toast with wild rocket and roasted tomatoes. Lunch features a cheese and bacon burger and sardines on toast.

Dinner is harder to pin down, when you consider Moroccan-spiced lamb ribs; pork belly with ginger broth; and albacore with shaved fennel. To match, there’s a compact alcohol menu that tends towards easy-drinking beer and wine.
