When a cafe chooses a name that pays homage to its product, it sets high expectations of itself. Thankfully, Flat White delivers on its promise. Nestled into a small, minimalist space beneath an art gallery in the heart of Woollahra, Flat White serves Toby’s Estate coffee alongside good food.

The staff are friendly, chatty and obliging. Somehow, they keep calm and cheerful amongst the chaos of the open kitchen and laissez faire customers who browse homemade baked goods.

On the weekends, expect a crowd of Paddington locals in for breakfast and lunch with the paper and the family. There’s high turnover here, so grab a stool along the narrow frontage and order a coffee while you wait.

Speaking of which, the coffee is best enjoyed with a homemade raspberry and coconut muffin or a slice of the fruit and nut loaf on the side. The all-day breakfast and lunch menu offers cafe favourites including baked eggs, smashed banana toast and a slow-cooked lamb sandwich. And, the ricotta hotcakes? They’re so good that the cafe could have been aptly named after them.
