UMU Organic (formerly Earth Food Store) is one of Sydney’s oldest wholefood stores. Now a cafe with a small corner dedicated to organic groceries, owners Caroline Attwooll and Jonathan Cohen continue to dish out seasonal, nutrient-rich breakfasts and lunches seven days a week.
Attwooll moved into the wholefoods business after an eye-opening trip to India in the late ‘80s, where she witnessed the impact of chemical-grade pesticides on rural farmers and their communities. On returning she learned the tools of the trade at an organic grocer in Clovelly before eventually finding Earth Food Store a more permanent home in Bondi Beach in 1991.
Attwooll and head chef Francesca von Schreibern consult closely to produce a brunch menu that celebrates nutrient-dense, vegetarian wholefoods. Try the Spiced Breakfast Quinoa, a hearty bowl of biodynamic brown rice, fruit compote and paleo granola warmed with a hint of honey, cinnamon and cardamom. Or maybe the dairy-free EFS Omelette – a take on the Vietnamese bánh xèo pancake, made with coconut milk and a touch of turmeric.
A smorgasbord of salads, sandwiches, wraps and quiches are displayed beneath the cafe counter windows. Expect organic choc-chip cookies, roast vegetable frittatas, and made-to-order cold pressed juices.
