The light and bright corner spot that houses Surry Hills cafe Bread & Brew is industrial-meets-Paris. Charcoal-grey walls and work shed-style chunky bar stools contrast with whitewashed chandeliers, petit wooden tables and dainty chairs. The wrap-around windows allow a great view of passing traffic, making it the perfect spot for people watching.

To eat, there’s a good selection of items to go, which is a must-have for the office workers frequenting this busy food strip. Takeaways include pies, pastries and homemade sandwiches, as well as cute chocolate-covered pretzels and tarts topped with mini macarons.

The dine-in menu offers a wide selection for breakfast, from Sonoma bread and muesli, to the more decadent cinnamon French toast with strawberry, maple syrup and Serendipity ice-cream. There is also smoked ocean trout with rocket, avocado, tomato relish and poached eggs, and the Bread & Brew Bean – homemade baked beans with smoked bacon and chorizo sausage topped with a fried egg and crusty bread.

A traditional selection of salads and burgers make up the lunch staples, in addition to a very reasonably priced soup of the day. For a bigger appetite, there's a number of warming winter dishes including meatball ragu with truffle mash and asparagus and pork cutlet with apple slaw, apple sauce and whole-grain mustard.

Coffee comes courtesy of Genovese Coffee, tea is from T2 and there’s a nice selection of Emma and Tom juices for those who don't need the caffeine hit.
