Born in Indonesia, Budiono Ali has combined his passion for the roasted bean with a strong connection to his homeland to bring coffee from the Indonesian archipelago to the area of St Peter’s.
From the hefty bags of coffee beans spread around the cafe, to the enormous Roastmax coffee-roasting machine in the back corner, Aslan unmistakably focuses on coffee; there is always three different types brewing.
Alongside Flores and Sumatera coffee, Ali recommends Aslan’s guest coffee, Sulawesi Toraja. Wet hulled and sun dried it has a heavy body and earthy characteristics.
The breakfast menu offers everything that constitutes a hearty start to the day – avocado or chorizo bruschetta and, of course, bacon and eggs. The already-popular breakfast bun contains crisp bacon, fried egg, rocket, tomato relish and sweet chipotle aioli in a Japanese bun.
The lunch menu consists of burgers, such as the slow-roasted pulled-pork burger, served with slaw and chips. The kitchen also has a number of specials available from 8am. Try the Mediterranean hotpot of grilled vegetables, poached egg, dukkah, feta cheese and sourdough bread.
