Artisan on Lewis
As the name implies, Artisan on Lewis is a hub for all sorts of handmade creations. Sisters Angela, Gabrielle and Kelly Leonard run the cafe and shop. They also contribute as jewellers, weavers, chefs, baristas and preservers.
Angela’s husband, Simon Staines, used to be the president of Mudgee Fine Foods. At the same time, Angela was launching her range of preserves, Angela’s Edibles. They opened Artisan on Lewis in 2014, to further their passion for community and gathering around food.
The cafe exudes a welcoming, family-friendly charm. A collective love of dogs is represented in the spacious, hound-friendly courtyard and the dog-themed wall art and pottery for sale. The shop also stocks scarves, delicate jewellery, hand-painted gift cards and crockery.
The menu is constantly changing, but Artisan on Lewis is committed to providing options for everyone. Gluten-free and vegetarian dishes are often the stars. The Egyptian Poached Eggs with hummus and dukkah on toast is a favourite among regulars.
When you order the Mudgee Mushrooms, the mushrooms have been gathered fresh that morning; the sourdough has been delivered hours before you arrived; and the secret mix of herbs has been picked from the pot plants in the garden or one of the sisters’ backyards. It’s a true backyard-to-table dining experience, with mushrooms like you’ve never tasted.
