5th Avenue Cafe
5th Avenue Cafe is just metres from the beachfront, with its row of pine-trees and bobbing yachts. The local institution brings a little bit of NYC to Shellharbour. With a wide verandah and street-side seating, it’s a comfy, neighbourhood joint where the staff wears T-shirts and hotpants.
As the name suggests, the menu has an American inflection, with burgers starring pulled pork, Southern fried chicken and smoky beef brisket alongside Philly cheesesteaks, Cubano sandwiches and “suicide” hot wings.
For those who aren’t into such a meat-forward breakfast, 5th Avenue also puts out a more coastal vibe. There are cold-pressed pineapple, cucumber, mint and kaffir lime juices from the Juice Farm; Golden Grind turmeric lattes; and vegan-friendly “bliss bowls” with quinoa, beetroot hummus, kale chips, avocado, lemon and slaw. And, it wouldn’t be a beachside cafe without a smashed avo. 5th Avenue’s features roasted tomato, beetroot puree and alfalfa sprouts, served on soy-and-linseed toast.
