A stone throw from the likes of Coffee Alchemy and Double Roasters, 2204 might seem like an unnecessary alternative to two of Sydney’s finest espresso bars. But there are several elements to this unassuming cafe that add considerable repute to the postcode for which it is named.

As one of a few locations in Sydney serving Five Senses coffee, 2204 is in very reliable company (Le Monde, Joe Black, Kitchen by Mike and Wedge Espresso). Offering some remarkable single origins alongside one of Sydney’s best chai lattes, 2204 presents some stiff competition to its esteemed neighbours.

2204 also has a well-crafted menu to back up its espresso. Choices include handmade pastas, pan-baked breakfasts, bread by Sonoma and a very popular Wagyu burger.

Amid the black tiles glistening beneath dim lights, melted candles, heavy timber and exposed brick, the interior feels a little like the wine cellar of a gothic castle. A jumble of games, cameras and various other thought provoking ornaments scatter about the cafe, leaving you to ponder the symbolic significance of a birdcage filled with paper cups as you enjoy your coffee.
