The Latest

Friday October 18, 2024: Kari-Tunes is the new Tiny Desk-esque concert series popping up in the Burwood ice-cream joint. It kicks off on Friday October 18, with Filipino R’n’B artist Jason Dhakal crooning in the slick space. The next gig is in a few weeks, with Clara Benin stopping in. The intimate concerts will be kept hush hush, so next time you’re in for those terrific scoops, you could be in for something special. Karit-Tunes is presented together with Filipino Australian podcast Cheatcoders.

There’s nothing simple about Kariton Sorbetes, the first Sydney outlet from the adored Melbourne ice-creamery of the same name. Consider the turon, a banana-based gelato with a muscovado butterscotch swirl, chunks of jackfruit and caramelised spring roll pastry. Or the champorado, a cocoa and roasted-rice gelato with fish sauce “salted” caramel.

The team’s Burwood Road shop launched with 16 flavours: 14 are signature and two are specials that rotate fortnightly. The original Kariton focused on Filipino flavours, but this new menu incorporates classic ingredients from neighbours across Asia.

Anyone who’s stopped in at the Melbourne shops will find Burwood’s futuristic yet rough-around-the-edges aesthetic familiar. Wood and exposed brick contrast with stainless steel fixtures, and neon lights shine overhead.
