Nine Yards Coffee
Bobby Saini is an accountant by trade, but he’s been in hospitality for a large chunk of his life. His parents owned a restaurant when he was growing up. Later, he ran Iconic Espresso & Tea in Chatswood and dabbled with coffee roasting in his mother’s garage.
Saini started Nine Yards in 2011, as a wholesale roastery on Old Pittwater Road. When his passion for hospitality led him back to cafes, he teamed up with wife Raj to open Nine Yards Coffee at its current location in early 2017.
Having faced a mostly closed clique when he first started out in the coffee industry, Saini wanted Nine Yards to be the opposite. The result is a totally immersive and inclusive two-storey space comprised of a ground-floor cafe that peeks into the roaster and a cupping (tasting) room upstairs that also acts as an overflow seating area. It’s simple and crisp, with concrete walls and wood tables offset by potted succulents and the Nine Yards' logo – a grinder blade.
Dishes run the gamut from healthy (breakfast bowls piled with rice, vegetables and various protein options) to hearty (Vietnamese chicken salad with coriander and citrus dressing). It’s a menu designed with local families, health nuts and tradies in mind.
Coffee is king here, though. Saini roasts three days a week for his wholesale clients using his original Dietrich roaster alongside a Probat cast-iron number. There are espresso blends, single origins and Clever Dripper filter brews. Ronnefeldt tea is available in eight varieties and is – refreshingly – treated with the same care as the coffee.
