Another two-hit wonder, the Winery puts on a bottomless spritz brunch on Saturdays and a a fabulous disco drag brunch on Sundays. Both are $89 and there’s great food and serious fun at both – you can’t go wrong either way.

Sometimes, particularly after a long day at work, it can be a pain squishing into a tiny wine bar or jostling for elbow room in a packed pub. The Winery, hidden off Crown Street in Surry Hills, strikes a happy balance between both. It has all the energy of a good neighbourhood boozer, but with a menu that’s leagues ahead of the average bistro.

European-inspired plates are where you start (burrata, crudo, octopus and friends), before heading over to mains like pasta alla norma and teak-smoked salmon with kipflers, kale, edamame and creme fraiche.

The wine list is one of the most considered on Crown, keeping the lo-fi crowd on side with South Australia’s Alpha Box & Dice and Unico Zelo, while classic labels like Tempus Two from New South Wales are present and accounted for. Spritz jugs and cocktails are on hand for long afternoon sessions.

The building is split between an upstairs dining area and a main bar on the ground floor. But it’s out in the garden that this place really comes into its own, particularly on a warm night, glass of prosecco in hand, listening to good tunes and better conversation.
