This cool small bar from the team behind Marilyna’s Pizza has helped inject new life into Freshwater. Part Western-style saloon, part nautical-themed bunker, locals anchor inside this cosy hideout most evenings for well-crafted cocktails, bar bites and the occasional rowdy night. Though the area itself is generally subdued, Scottish bar manager, Fraser Hill, says his crew has come to expect dancing on tables on a school night as part of Stowaway’s charm.
Co-owner Bryony Proctor travels to New York on reconnaissance, and her knack and passion for the business shows. More subtle than screw-your-face-up, the cocktails here are the work of experienced, light hands and show elegant restraint. The Lychee Snowman is served in a medieval-style metal goblet. The pretty-in-pink Moulin Rouge is garnished with a hibiscus flower. And the Haute Fizz is a creamy concoction of cognac, galliano vanilla, lemon, soda topped with a red wine float and seasoned with black pepper. Bar snacks including Ring Ding hot wings and chicken Katsu San sliders with minted slaw, cashews and roast red capsicum aioli are reason alone to make a regular voyage to this spot.
