In a suburb full of great pubs, The Royal Hotel has long been one of Paddington’s best. It’s a local institution that’s been going strong since it opened in 1888. And for decades, the heritage corner site’s rooftop has been beloved by locals as a meeting place for a schooner – with some pretty special views of the city on the side.

In 2024 The Royal copped a $1 million renovation, reopening with updated interiors and menus across its four levels. On ground level, an expanded sports bar has swallowed the old bottle shop, and now flaunts one of the biggest multi-screen walls in the east. Whatever your favourite footy code is, chances are it's showing here.

The new-look Veranda Bar and Balcony upstairs is a sophisticated space in which to park and get across the menu by executive chef Scott Greve. Expect upmarket pub grub like steak frites with cafe de Paris, and a hot dog ferrying an LP’s snag. Plus, a fancy update on prawn toast with brioche, miso mayo and yuzu gel.

An events space, The Elephant Room, gives British private club energy with burnt-orange velvet, a marble-topped bar and brass features throughout. Two spaces can be configured for both seated and cocktail-style events, making it a versatile option for your next soirée.
