It’s a tiny gold box of a venue opposite the tennis courts and traffic drag of Belgrave Street in Manly, but once you step through the gauzy curtains to peruse the comprehensive spirits list, you’ll slip into another place and time – this is a tequila bar after all.
Wallpaper printed with silvery ferns draws you towards the gold bar at the far end of the room, while cushy tropical print couches rub shoulders with cozy dinner tables and sultry ladies wink at you from the cover of the cocktails list. The cover art is actually by Joseph Henry Lynch; you would have noticed similar beauties adorning the walls of any 1950s feel joint worth its salt.
The team here – Kieran Bailey and Adam Clarke – have been inundated with praise and it’s easy to see why. Empanadas and quesadillas might make for a tasty snack from chef Paul Del Atura, while the bohemian Latino charm of the small space alone is enough to keep you trying different gins or whiskeys. But really, you come here for the comprehensive list of tequilas, sorted by age. And whilst smoking may not be as cool as it was, it’s a cute gimmick to see a cigarette and cigar menu included at the back of the drinks list.
