Italian for “a thousand wines”, Mille Vini is a place for long, relaxed afternoons filled with good conversation, and even better wine. The venue’s list runs just short of 100 wines, with regional Italian, French and Australian varieties to complement the dining menu.
Owner Rhaad Fogerty (previously venue manager of The Winery) purchased the business in 2014 after two years working as manager.
If you’re lucky, you’ll nab the best seats in the house; by the window, overlooking Crown Street. Otherwise, settle in along the leather banquette opposite the bar under the forgiving, first-date-friendly lighting.
The traditional Italian-with-a-twist menu might include house-made chicken-liver pate with Hank’s fig and cinnamon jam; or cured slices of swordfish topped with breadcrumbs fried with thyme and garlic.
For secondi, there are fresh pastas and risottos. On Mondays, there’s a rotating selection of all-you-can-eat pastas for $18.
To finish, there’s an ever-changing cheese platter, or you can go wild with sfingi – light, fluffy donuts served with Nutella and best paired with a good sticky muscat.
