The MCA is joining elite museums around the world to celebrate NYC’s MoMa exhibition, Yoko Ono: One Woman Show. On Sunday, June 21, Yoko Ono Morning Peace will host a number of peaceful activities to ease you into the day.

The world-wide event will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Yoko Ono’s New York performance, Morning Piece (1964). This work involved Ono selling shards of glass with different dates put on them.

Rachel Kent, who curated the 2013 Yoko Ono exhibition, War is Over! (If You Want It) says that Morning Peace will be a kind of continuation of the exhibition. “It made great sense to follow on from our major solo exhibition of Yoko Ono, extending the relationship with Yoko Ono’s practice.” Kent describes the effect of the morning taking place in different time zones around the world. “It’s an artwork, if you like, unfolding over a 24-hour period.”

The MCA will be saluting the sun, with two free hour-long yoga sessions run by Joel Corpuz, of Give Back On Your Matt and Mel Mclaughlin of The Yin Space.

“The incorporation of yoga in the morning made a lot of sense, welcoming the day. Yoko Ono’s work references this introspective thought – an awareness of one’s humanity and one’s relation to the world.”

The morning event, from 9am to 1pm, will also include art activities; an art- making mandala workshop on the front lawn for all ages, and two outdoor drawing classes. Kent says every aspect of the morning was created with Ono’s practice in mind.

“The idea behind this morning, and much of Yoko Ono’s practice, is that you help to create the work and the meaning behind it. It’s about giving people the opportunity to participate in the process.”

The entire gallery will be open earlier than usual (9am) and the MCA cafe will be serving an American-style breakfast in a nod to the MoMa exhibit.
