Leonie Psillis and Anita Zappia are the co-founders of Allegra Stone. The duo specialises in beautifully crafted, handmade marble homewares. Each piece is unique, due to the nature of the Italian Carrara marble from which they’re made. “Our objective is to ensure our pieces are everlasting – just like the material from which they are made.”
Allegra Stone pieces are minimalist, with clean lines, and come in unconventional shapes, so they can be used for different purposes (the website, perhaps deliberately, doesn’t state a specific use for each piece). The Allegra’s Puzzle, which is four puzzle pieces that fit together, launched the brand’s collection earlier this year. The bold Cross is as sculptural as it is practical. There are also bowls, trays, trivets and vases.
“Our brand image and designs are inspired by the female form,” says Psillis. “Allegra Stone is sexy, mysterious, bold and timeless.”
Psillis has a marketing background, but has worked with marble for the past few years, recently handcrafting coasters from marble tiles with imagery from around the world. “I fell in love with the stone's natural beauty,” she says. Zappia was running her own soy-candle business, Hub & I. “Anita and I discovered we both shared this vision over a very spontaneous conversation, and the rest is history.”
Working from a range of basic geometric shapes, the duo designs each piece, pushing each other so that every object is a statement. “All of our designs really mean something to us, and represent a specific element of our brand,” says Psillis.
