It’s easy for us to grow accustomed to our sleek surroundings every time we go out for a coffee or a knock-off cocktail. Australia’s cafes, bars and restaurants have some of the highest standards of design in the world.

Last week three Australian venues were named winners in the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards in London.

Sydney's Số9, by Brandworks, won best restaurant category in the Australia and Pacific region. “We wanted to do traditional street food but in a contemporary setting that no one expected,” Số9’s co-owner, Kim Tran told Broadsheet. The restaurant's U-shape forms three stations. On the street side there's a tuckshop doing takeaway lunches; the other half of the kitchen faces the middle section, which is dedicated to noodle soups.. It has a long table and a series of booths reminiscent of Vietnamese street stalls. The last section is the banh xeo (crispy pancakes) station, which looks out onto a water-colour-painted wall by artist Beth-Emily Gregory. It's a luxurious space with pale wood, duck-egg-blue banquettes and gold finishes.

Melbourne’s Kitty Burns, by Biasol Design Studio, won the UK and International cafe category. The Abbotsford spot features lofty ceilings and is flooded with natural light. Dining booths are framed beneath individual timber “roofs”, a standalone coffee bar is lined with turquoise tiling, and dark-green hedges peek through faux windows and the outlines of houses along the walls.

Adelaide’s Pink Moon Saloon took out the Australia and Pacific bar category. The tiny hideaway, designed by Matiya Marovich of Sans-Arc Studio, sits in a former laneway between two office blocks in the bustling bar precinct of Leigh Street. The timber-lined alpine hut is split into three sections: a dark, narrow bar; a leafy courtyard; and booths sitting alongside an open kitchen with a wood oven churning out deli meats, hand-cut chips, charred vegetables and its famous club sandwich.
