Diverging from the brand’s sporty roots and promoting their emphasis on collaboration, Adidas Originals has teamed up with Joseph Allen Shea, of Gallery A.S. and Monster Children fame. As an independent publisher, curator and gallerist, Shea is renowned for his pop-up art spaces in unusual locations and the fusing of street art with contemporary. With In Synthesis he has brought together a huge range of female artists operating across several mediums including installation, performance, kinetic sculpture, video and dance for a three day exhibition at The Paramount Building in Surry Hills.

In Synthesis notably includes video art from Australian four-piece The Kingpins, famous for their acerbic and entertaining commentary on gender, consumerism and pop culture, alongside famed international electro-clash performance artists Chicks on Speed. Also contributing work is Kate Mitchell, one half of the multi-disciplinary art studio Greedy Hen, not to mention Even Books, famous for their literary events that fuse book club with performance. Shea has also recruited interdisciplinary artists Agatha Gothe-Snape, Parachutes for Ladies, Bianca Chang (in collaboration with UTS students), Kevina-Jo Smith and Nell and Bec Machine.

More than just a group show or PR stunt, Shea has brought together a sporting brand with leading Australian art makers to work in a genuinely collaborative context.

In Synthesis opens Thursday August 30 (6pm–9pm) and runs until Sunday September 2 at The Paramount Building, 53–55 Brisbane Street, Surry Hills.
