It’s no secret that Sydney harbour is one of the best playgrounds in the world, but add to it a line up of events in the glorious outdoor spaces of the Opera House and you’ve got one hell of a stage set for good times.
The exciting news this year is that the team from Bondi’s The Corner House (Anthony Kaplan, Brent Mills and Simon Beckingham) are taking up residence at the Opera House for the summer season (right through to April), bringing us Garden Bar.
It’s an all day pop-up offering Mediterranean flare with rotisserie, salad bar, cocktails and burgers to make the most of that summer feel. Breakfast is on offer too and the day might even begin with morning yoga sessions or end with live evening DJ sets. You’ll find the Garden Bar outside the House’s Western Foyers, just lookout for pop-up leafy gardens and day beds.
This is the second year that La Soiree’s Brett Haylock has acted as creative director for Summer Playground and the team has brought together an array of family friendly and summer-centric activities. Some of the fun events lined up include:
Architects of Air - These clever minds will be taking over the Opera House Forecourt with a giant, inflatable, cityscape sculpture including a labyrinth of tunnels and domes.
Summer Sunset Tour - With the sun sinking over the harbour, the Opera House comes to life in lights and there’s the opportunity to take a one-hour guided tour behind the scenes of the summer’s shows, while exploring the 40-year history of the House.
The Flying Fruit Fly Circus - The creative team from the circus will be running workshops, culminating in a Circus Parade around the Summer Playground. For a full listing of Summer Playground happenings running from January to April 2014 visit: sydneyoperahouse.com/summeratthe_house
