With Sydney’s growing appreciation of AFL and a thriving music presence, comes the Reclink Community Cup. For the past two decades, an assortment of Australian rock royalty have dusted off their footy boots for the annual scratch-match in Melbourne, but for the second year running up north, the Sydney Sailors and the Western Walers will battle it out on the field at Henson Park.

Defending champions the Sailors made up of popular radio personalities, featuring Triple J Breakfast’s Alex Dyson and ABC 702’s Adam Spencer, will be up for a fight this year as the musically inclined Walers including The Mess Hall’s Cec Condon and Jed Kurzel, along with former ACDC member Mark Evans and Smudge’s Adam Yee.

With musical greats seamlessly transitioning from the field to stage, enjoy the match with a beverage from Vic on the Park Hotel and something to snack on from Ruby’s BBQ or Suzy Spoon’s Vegetarian butcher.

For all the fun and frivolity, there is a serious side to the day that is not lost on the participants. Reclink provides 1000 activities per month around the country for victims of mental illness, addiction, domestic violence and unemployment among others. These activities range from homeless footy leagues to guitar circles and aim for participants to “feel better about themselves for a day or turn their lives around”, and all funds raised on the day are channelled towards supporting these projects.

Head on down to Henson Park this Sunday August 25 from midday for this formidable football clash, all in the name of a good cause.

Entry is a gold coin donation.
