With the start of February comes the reopening of Sydney’s commercial galleries. The last week has seen a host of new shows launching in and around the wider East Sydney area, including last night’s opening of Mountains & Valleys, the new group show at James Dorahy Project Space in Potts Point.
Taking its title as something of a loose cue, all work in the show either features mountains and valleys or forges a conceptual link to the subject. Indeed, this is by no means a straight landscape show. Featuring the work of several Sydney-based artists – including Paul Donald, Tracy Sarroff, Sarah Newall, Nuha Saad and Sherna Teperson – Mountains & Valleys draws on a far more lateral interpretation of its theme.
Highlights include Sydney photo artist Max Creasy’s constructed rock form, Marita Fraser’s photographic collage and acrylic work, Ali Noble’s vividly coloured felt wall works and photographer Alexander James’ atmospheric, nonetheless historically loaded landscapes.
