What do you do when you’re trying to think of an outlet for your home-knitted banana jewellery and Fimo brooches? Create your own market, of course.
Market aficionado Courtney Johnson (Blackbird Market, Melbourne) and friend Claire Ward came up with the concept for a new, regular monthly event to bridge the gap between the schoolyard market and high-end design shop when nursing hangovers in their local pub. They realised that while Sydney had plenty of annual or one-off events, there was nothing for craft lovers to get their teeth stuck into on a regular basis.[fold]
Just four months later and the first Lonely Hunter market is due to open its doors this Saturday July 27 at the Newtown Social Club (the pub formerly known as The Sandringham), bringing together some of Sydney’s best new and established designers, artists and craft creators in the one place.
“We wanted to start a regular event where Sydney creatives could sell their wares without necessarily having to be established designers,” says Johnson. “If you know you’ve made something great, but you only have 10 of them, you can sell them here and see what people think. It’s friendly and you don’t have to have it all figured out yet to join in!”
By putting on a regular event, Johnson also hopes to create a context for designers and craft makers to meet each other and their customers in the flesh, and not just online. They also have future plans to hold workshops at the markets so craft lovers can learn a new skill as well as just shop.
Anything from accessories to knitwear, clothing, candles and illustrations are for sale and have been selected by the girls for their interesting designs or clever craft sensibilities.
Stallholders as this month’s market include Whiskers Lane (animal inspired jewellery and accessories), Bless Your Cotton Socks (Ward’s own knitted banana range), Stephanie Earl Designs (prints and cards) and Rainy Sunday (boutique drinking jars).
Those working up an appetite cruising the stalls will be able to chow down on a selection of food and drink specials from the Social Club kitchen, including pizzas, hot dogs and shared snacks.
