Twenty bucks doesn’t buy you much these days, let alone a handcrafted, limited edition work by a local artist. Enter the Oxford Street Design Store. A clever concept brought to life by Louise Helliwell and Alex De Bonis from the Tough Titties blog – which champions all things creative, talented and female – with the assistance of the City of Sydney. The Design Store showcases and sells the wares of local designers, artists, writers and creative’s, with one key difference – all goods retail for $20 or less.
The Design Store, which is currently functioning as a pop-up on a rolling six-month lease, purveys such crafty contributions as prints, jewellery, tees, totes, cards, zines, illustrations and books. Meanwhile, the back area is available as a workspace for hire (hourly or daily) as well as playing host to talks and workshops, whereby the local community can connect with contributing local artists and designers by learning and sharing new skills.
In fact, the Awesome Foundation Sydney – a not-for-profit organisation which gives out $1,000 no-strings-attached grants each month – thought the Oxford Street Design Store was such a flash of brilliance it awarded them a grant in February to help the project find its feet.
The Design Store is still accepting contributions from local artists for works to sell, as well as help from volunteers and interns. So get making or go shopping.
