Not unlike the New York City borough, the Hawkesbury town of Brooklyn makes the most of being on the fringe. Officially Sydney’s most northern suburb, it’s far enough away to inspire that holiday feeling, but close enough to warrant a day-trip. Now it’s home to a creative workshop studio Act Casual, which runs skills-based classes ranging from cheese-making to yarn crocheting.
Run by the husband-and-wife duo behind The Brooklyn Tuckshop (Amanda Gonzalez and Lincoln Donaldson), Act Casual aims to help participants become less wasteful and more self-sufficient. Workshops cover the whole production process – Gonzalez assures they “remove both training wheels.” In the case of making jam, this includes everything from identifying seasonal produce to bottling the final product.
The workshops span three main categories: craft, nature, and food and drink. Yarn crocheting, cheese-making, weaving and dyeing with botanicals are the first workshops available, with pickling and Japanese book-binding to follow shortly.
Included in the price of the workshops are all materials and a morning tea, lunch or afternoon tea.
