When jewellery designer Brooke Johnston and fashion designer Sarah Thornton decided to join forces and create a market space dedicated to up-and-coming local designers in December 2008, they never dreamed they would one day be managing what has become a tri-state market institution. With the Australian appetite yearning for both a showcase of what young talent are capable of and also for affordable, unique garments, homewares and bespoke trinkets, the girls’ formula turned out to be a recipe for success.[fold]

Part exhibition, part market, Finders Keepers is an avenue for buying and selling, designer networking and browsing all things beautiful, funky and grin-inducing. Originally based in Carriageworks in Eveleigh, the markets have shifted only a couple of metres away this year into the Australian Technology Park in Eveleigh’s Exhibition Hall. Three times the size, the autumn/winter markets for 2013 are shaping up to be the biggest, best, and most adventurous of the Finders Keepers series to date.

Johnston and Thornton have carefully curated each design entry, ensuring only the leading and most innovative of Sydney’s next generation have made the cut. Also added to the line-up will be local produce chosen by Real Food Projects, coffee stalls by Allpress and a selection of food trucks parked outside, including the Veggie Patch Van.

It’s easy to spend hours in the Finders Keepers markets trawling through stalls such as Bespoke Letterpress for snail mail inspiration, the interactive, experiential stall TMOD, and the mecca of tailored knickknacks in the form of Frankie magazine’s vintage emporium. With 200 booths set up, you’ll find a range covering every style, from elaborate brogues at Marcue to crochet bikinis from Lovebird and ceramic vessels from Mrs Peterson Pottery.

Since 2008, Finders Keepers has crossed state lines to launch in Brisbane and Melbourne, filling the gap for emerging artisans and designers looking for a platform to showcase their designs. The markets have filled the void that the world of online shopping has created. Nothing can compare to the tangibility of an item that has been laboured over and created with patience, intent and talent. And this is where you’ll find it.
