With more than 230 up-and-coming and hard-to-find designers, and plenty to keep you fed, watered and amused as you shop, The Big Design Market is a clever option for kick-starting (or completing) your Christmas shopping.

The Big Design Market centres on original and authentic design work. Held in Moore Park’s Royal Hall of Industries, it offers lighting and furniture; jewellery; textiles and linen; ceramics; handmade toys; art and more. And while a handful of designers will be familiar to Sydneysiders, most are from further afield.

“Only about 20 of the 200-plus designers are from NSW,” says market director Simon Obarzanek. “We’ve selected designers from all over the country, as well as from New Zealand and Japan.”

Keep an eye out for Magpie Goose, which makes tops, pants and dresses using vibrant textiles designed and screen printed in remote Aboriginal communities. And Rainbeau’s pop-bright bento-style lunch boxes to encourage healthy snacking; Kester Black’s cruelty-free nail polish; and gold-flecked ceramics from Victoria’s Bridget Bodenham.

This year’s event also features a set of workshops: nail art with Kester Black, making customised hotel slippers with Cat Rabbit, and a beginner’s guide to growing indoor plants with plant social network The Plant Society. There’ll also be a five-metre-high floral installation by Melbourne based Pete Cromer.

On the menu this year is Mary’s, Shortstop Donuts, Messina gelato, Fishbowl poke bowls, Argentinian cooking from the Porteno team and Smoking Gun Bagels. Get your coffee from Welcome Dose – or something a little stronger from Archie Rose or Young Henrys.
