The old Macquarie Hotel on the corner of Goulburn Street and Wentworth Avenue in Surry Hills has finally finished its transformation into Hotel Harry, with the unveiling of 20 boutique rooms.

“We’re so excited that after more than two years our project is complete,” says CEO Christian Denny. “Two levels and five bars are dedicated to food and beverage service, and another two levels to boutique accommodation,” says the hotelier. “You can drink, dine, dance and stay with us.”

Late last year the century-old, heritage-listed hotel launched Harpoon Harry in the ground-floor public bar, along with more dining, a cocktail lounge and an open-air terrace on level one.

The team has worked hard to keep the character of the old hotel, which was originally opened in 1912. The new-look rooms are styled with masculine touches such as blue-tartan throw rugs; leather wall straps for clothing storage; Edison-style lighting; plush, royal-blue carpets; and a teal-blue colour scheme. Quirky layouts – dictated by the old building – mean that each room is different. From singles to double-doubles and suites, some even have original fireplaces and rescued wardrobes.

The hotel’s menu is full of punchy flavours such as grill plates of ribs and jerk chicken, towers of polenta batons topped with jamon, or guacamole that comes naked or dressed. The cocktail list is long, with build-your-own mojitos a highlight (pick your rum, fruit and sweetener). Enjoy them in booths, in the hubbub of the public bar, or under the open sky of the terrace. It’s also all available in-room with 24-hour room service and concierge (full menu until 10pm).

Vittoria coffee-pod machines are in each room as well as the thoughtful inclusion of earplugs – because the party downstairs can kick-on well into the wee hours, but that’s all part of the charm.
