Even if you think it’s cheesy and unoriginal, receiving an unexpected bunch of flowers is one of those rare events that can immediately lift you out of your daily trance and into a tidal wave of love and gratitude.

But should you have to wait until you’re a mother or it’s your birthday to get some? No is the emphatic answer from Sarah Regan, creator of Little Flowers. The concept – like so many other successful ideas – is so simple you‘ll kick yourself for not thinking of it first. An online florist with one type of seasonal flower each day, always $30 a bunch, with same-day delivery until they sell out. No paralysing surplus of choice, no outrageous expenses.

Regan, who worked in advertising for 10 years before deciding on a change, said the idea for Little Flowers was borne from a conversation with a friend who chastised her husband for buying her expensive flowers (poor guy). She realised it was the gesture – the ‘sorry’ or ‘thank you’ or ‘I love you’ – that was the important thing that was being delivered.

Four months after opening, the business is booming. One of Regan’s favourite things is discovering people’s reasons for sending flowers. “There are a lot of cute, ‘just want to brighten your day’ ones. We’ve had some weird ones like ‘thanks for letting me borrow the hair straightener’ and ‘thanks for the muffin this morning’. And there are beautiful, romantic sentiments too and strange little requests which we always try to accommodate,” she says.

Little Flowers started out delivering to the city and eastern suburbs, and has already expanded to the inner west and over the bridge. “We have plans for global domination,” Regan laughs. “We’re getting requests from different areas all the time, so we are expanding at a rate that doesn’t overwork us and so we still maintain the quality of service to our existing customers.”
