The Rockdale Outdoor Gallery Art Prize, now in its fourth year, is a free outdoor sculpture exhibition lining the shore of Botany Bay. Closing this Sunday, it features 24 sculptural works by local and regional artists that have been created site-specifically.
The artworks include personal meditations on the area as well as environmental statements. Recollection is a sculpture dedicated to the artist Angie Kolistasis’ mother, who arrived from Greece with four young children in tow to bring them up with memories of picnics, swimming and fishing on the bay.
Rocktastic is a playful take on plastic pollution. Angela Van Boxtel has crocheted plastic shopping bags into a lace-like pattern on rocks in a bid to make people more aware of the impact littering has on our waterways and oceans.
After you’ve ambled through this temporary sculpture park, stop off at The Knafeh Bakery, who have taken up residency here as part of the festival. Enjoy their traditional Levant dessert of “sweet cheese semolina pudding with a fine crumbing mixture on top that is baked crisp to create a crunchy, crumble coating with a hot, oozing centre,” as described by AJ (Ameer) El-issa, owner of this shipping-container-come-bakery.
