The idea for Pony Rider had been brewing for quite some time, percolating away while founder Kelly Searl was working in branding, strategy and broadcast design. Her career had zigzagged through the fashion industry, working as a garment and print designer for several companies throughout Sydney.
After marrying and having a baby, Searl founded Pony Rider amongst the chaos of starting a young family. "I noticed that there was a gap in the market and wanted to up the ante in the homewares sector,” she says. “Everything seemed a tad neutral and targeted an older market."
Producing affordable homewares with a fashion bent is what Pony Rider – which launches a pop-up in the lead-up to Christmas – is all about, taking seasonal inspirations from nature tempered with a modern and industrial edge and driven by strong shapes and well-curated colours. And Pony Rider is proudly Australian made.
Based in Avalon, the brand nurtures a strong sense of community. "We had a launch night the other night and everyone brought their children and hung out on the streets having a few drinks while the kids were drawing in chalk on the foot path," she says.
Expect a whole range of goodies in the Pony Rider pop-up, from cushions, oversized canvas bags, handmade quilted throws, wallpapers and more, as well as a wonderful edit of gifts for family and friends for this Christmas.
