Down a sandstone stairway in Darlinghurst, beside a quiet, leafy courtyard, is Catapult Design – a new design showroom featuring pieces from new Australian talent and a neat roster of international craft. Originally a roaming consultancy for the architecture and design industries, founders Leigh Johnson and Aaron Zorzo have now set up a home base and store in Sydney to promote their carefully curated collection of furniture and homewares.
“Catapult believes strongly that Australia has some of the best design talent in the world, and a major driving force behind much of what we do is built around supporting and growing their talents, skills and recognition,” says Catapult’s Ross Colebatch. The vast majority of the small but growing roster of designers housed within the Catapult showroom are Australian. “Our designers have an eye for beauty, materials, longevity, sustainability and/or what people want,” he says. “Some will have an eye for all, some for one or two, but all of them want to create products that people will not only want but be proud to display and treasure.”
The Catapult style is subtle and sleek. Find a seriously striking set of folded stainless steel cheese blades by Canberra-based Studio Jackson alongside jade-hued marble boards from Catapult’s signature collection, and timber beaded hanging globes by Sydney-based Marz Designs.
“Each designer is unique, each offers something new,” says Colebatch. “Regardless of how established they are, we are interested in working with designers who fit with our brand concept and who complement our collection.”
