Acclaimed Designer Studio Henry Wilson Opens Its First Retail Space in Paddington

Residents of Paddington Street have a new neighbour – and a very chic one at that. Studio Henry Wilson has moved into number 87 on the leafy boulevard. “I happened to catch a sign at a small space underneath the old Scout Hall and I admired the even light from both sides and the large, copper-lined Victorian shopfront window,” says founder and designer Henry Wilson. “It had a simple, flexible interior by the architect Madeleine Blanchfield … it had housed her meeting room and library for several years.”
Wilson launched his namesake studio in 2012. It’s likely you’ve eyed the brand’s signature brass lights and metal objects in the pages of interior magazines. You might also be familiar with its aesthetic from projects with Aesop and the finishes at Sydney’s Ace Hotel.
The new retail space is a treasure trove for design fiends. Sliding partitions reveal and conceal stone lighting and timber wall leaves from the Studio Henry Wilson collection. Stainless steel cabinetry runs the length of the store acting as storage while also offering a unique backdrop for displaying items.
“I’ve long imagined opening a store to show the products I design and make here in Australia, alongside a collection of items I find to be beautiful or functional, or both.”
Wilson’s obsession with beautiful, functional items is clear. You’ll find delicate linen pieces from Japanese label Échapper, pens from German brand Kaweco and incense and oils from Perfumer H and Aesop, as well as personal care products from English brand To My Ships.
Wilson sees the space as an opportunity to showcase things he has collected and admired over his career in design. He also hopes it will be a chance to connect with clients and fans of the brand in a new way. “I wanted a place to meet and to house the objects we make. Somewhere for the public to see, feel and sense what we do.”
While Studio Henry Wilson pieces run a four-to-six-week production schedule, you can shop and take home items from the store on the spot. You can also stop by for tea and a chat, and to browse his collection of design books.
