Hugh Stewart has come a long way since his early years in rural New Zealand. From his self-taught beginnings, he has since forged a photographic career that has featured countless magazine commissions from the likes of British, Australian, French and American Vogue, Travel + Leisure, Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone among others, in addition to numerous international advertising campaigns. He now divides his time between London, Los Angeles, Sydney, New York and New Zealand.
Portraiture has always been a key part of Stewart’s work and his new exhibition at Sun Studios, 50 Portraits, features his incisive photographs of famous figures like Johnny Cash, Clint Eastwood, Nicole Kidman and Catherine Deneuve. The works delve into the personalities and people behind the media visage and showcase Stewart’s technical acumen, cultivated across two decades of shooting. Stewart’s portraits are iconic, but not blaringly obvious; they are beautiful and memorable for all the right reasons.
The exhibition will be aptly featured at photographic studio, Sun Studios. All prints will be signed and limited to an edition of one, with proceeds from 50 Portraits going to The Newborn Centre at the Royal Women’s Hospital.
Portraits runs from June 5 to 12 at Sun Studios, 42 Maddox Street, Alexandria.
