It can be hard to get a weekend breakfast seat at this converted 1893 corner store, but once you do manage it, you’ll understand why regulars will patiently queue. The brunch-focused menu plays breakfast and lunch options against one another and picking a winner will only leave you wanting a rematch.

The site's history has been lovingly maintained, including the reinstation of a lost wrap-around balcony upstairs. Blue pub tiles give an ocean wash to the corner façade, while mermaid murals mix with cog-mechanic artwork – a reassuring medley of French bistro and Byron Bay. And there’s an Escha-esque mural on the bathroom floor that makes for interesting toilet breaks.

The best seats in the house are by the front window – watching the hopeful queue while you gloat with a celebratory Carnivale organic tea. It’s a little out of the way, hidden off the main Annandale drags, but follow the locals and you’ll soon uncover one of the brunching gems of the inner west.
