While this building’s previous life as an auction house may have ended, the perpetual antique markets (once held on the first floor) now have command of the entire building. Indeed, Mitchell Road Antique & Design Centre offers just as much by way of vintage curiosities, second-hand or restored furniture and independent design, but on a permanent basis.
Because the stalls have different owners, there is a rollicking diversity of things to choose from here, from Japanese toy robots and banjolins, to French provincial toilets, telescopes, the ottoman you never realised you needed, or a genuine British military coat. And that’s just a smattering of the treasures held within this cavern; a place often raided by owners of retro furniture stores and a favourite for interior designers across Sydney.
Mitchell Road is made for treasure hunters who are up for sifting, sorting and seeing the potential in things. It’s always worth a browse even (or especially) if you’re not looking for something in particular.
Mitchell Road Antique & Design Centre has permanently moved to 17 Bourke Road, Alexandria.
