Combining timeless forms and durable materials, DesignByThem founders Nick Karlovasitis and Sarah Gibson work closely with a number of Australian designers to produce innovative furniture and accessories that are built to last.

The pair opened this showroom as an extension of the existing studio and workshop. It’s a place where customers can meet the designers and gain more insight into the products they’re buying.

It’s an open, industrial space punctuated by pops of colour. Neon signs point the way to the connecting studio and workshop, where the duo has hosted talks on subjects such as sustainability, authenticity and women in design.

The pair’s designs draw attention to the beauty in everyday household objects. Take the Dial Hose Hanger, for example. A perfect circle set against the painted brickwork of the showroom walls, it appears more of a deliberate design element than a utilitarian household item. One of their most popular products is the TomTom – a colourful take on the typical suburban letterbox.

Environmental sensitivity is paramount – both Gibson and Karlovasitis have taught EcoDesign at UTS. Utilising materials such as recycled plastic, powdercoated metal and solid timber, they’ve created a range of furniture that is both recycled and recyclable.

The pair also wants its products to stand the test of time. If colour trends change, customers can bring back their product to have it recoated in a different colour.
