Since taking over her first boutique fitness studio in Waterloo in 2012, Pilates instructor and Fluidform founder Kirsten King has made a name for herself in Australia’s wellness world. The success of Fluidform’s first studio (which has since moved a few streets north to Surry Hills) led to the launch of a second studio, Fluidform Clovelly, in 2018. Since then, the brand has grown to six studios across New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, as well as a digital platform offering on-demand classes and personalised wellness programs, all incorporating King’s holistic and functional approach to movement.

Now, Fluidform has opened its seventh studio: a cavernous space encompassing two converted Rosebery warehouses.

“The schedule at the Rosebery studio will be the same [as the others] – we know what our community wants – but it’s the design of the space that really sets it apart. There’s a real New York-loft feel to it,” King tells Broadsheet.

After receiving her qualification from the Australian Pilates Method Association, King went on to earn her Stott (an offshoot of traditional Pilates that focuses on maintaining a neutral spine) instructor certification, before creating her own training method. All Fluidform instructors undergo comprehensive training in King’s bespoke program. The classes – which count a slew of high-profile wellness enthusiasts as fans, including PE Nation co-founder Pip Edwards and model Georgia Fowler – are designed to improve strength, flexibility, posture and overall wellness through a technical, balanced approach.

Located in a site that was once two separate buildings, the new space continues the minimalist aesthetic of the other studios, with cavernous ceilings, whitewashed walls and a wrought-iron mezzanine level that looks over the six-bed reformer studio. The other room is a 112-square-metre space with four metres of mirrors, which hosts mat-based classes.

Fluidform’s Clovelly and Surry Hills studios have maintained a consistent client base since reopening post-lockdown, and the Rosebery studio is designed to cater to the business’s growing community.

“A lot of our Fluidform at Home members are based in that area of Sydney, and we wanted to offer them the experience of both at-home and in-studio classes. We’re so happy to see how so many people have benefited from being able to access classes at home, but the community element is really important,” King says.
