Five years after opening one of Perth’s best brunch destinations, Tbsp, brothers Hanji and Hanli Khor opened Forklore in West Perth, in a former office space at the entrance to the City West shopping centre. The name is both wordplay – their third cafe will have to reference a knife, jokes Hanji – and a reference to Asian folklore.
The inviting fit-out is clean, modern and well-lit, with black and white accents throughout. The out-of-the-way location is an unexpected one, but, like Tbsp, it's managed to pull crowds from all over.
Head chef Brian Kong’s menu resists the usual Perth brunch options with a refreshing line-up of pan-Asian-inspired dishes. Yes, there’s eggs on toast but there’s also scrambled eggs with bacon XO; tonkotsu congee with pork-neck chashu, ajitama egg, mustard greens, burnt garlic oil and chilli oil.
Later in the day, you might find duck nanban (a Japanese noodle dish) with duck broth, sous-vide duck breast, duck tsukune and udon noodles; and a stacked chicken katsu sando on shokupan (Japanese milk loaf) so generously sized you might want a friend to split it with. There's also a version of Tbsp’s legendary cheeseburger, plus croissants and other pastries to go with coffee by Five Senses.
Tbsp’s ramen and burger nights were consistently sold out, and you can expect similar pop-ups at Forklore on occasion.
