Every suburb needs a neighbourhood cafe – a buzzy hub where regulars are greeted by name and newcomers feel immediately at home. Piccolo’s Corner is West Leederville’s.

Here, breakfast is as pretty as it is delicious, piled high on ornate porcelain plates. Order one of the cafe’s best sellers – the smashed pea and avo on New Norcia toast, or the house-made meatballs made from organic Manjimup beef. Or throw caution to the wind and go for a thick slice of the flourless chocolate cake and a cup of Five Senses coffee.

Inside, it’s op-shop chic: wide, paint-chipped tables laden with china sugar dishes and ceramic pitchers of roses sit under shelves of faded glass bottles and gilt-framed images of the Virgin Mary.

Outside there’s a lush courtyard, shaded by the yarn-bombed branches of the giant frangipani and a mural by The Yok and Sheryo. Presiding over it all is gregarious owner Shanel De Silva. Her adorable son might not be so piccolo anymore, but he’s inspired one hell of a cafe.
