Mary Street Bakery in West Leederville has a deceptive name on two counts. It’s not on Mary Street. And the term bakery doesn’t do it justice.

Like the original – a cult bakery and cafe on Mary Street in Highgate – MSB 2.0 goes well beyond takeaway bread and pastries with an eclectic all-day brunch menu. It’s kept the classics that deserve a place in the Instagram hall of fame, such as fried chicken with buttermilk pancakes.

The fit-out is similar too, incorporating details such as round tiling, panelled walls and the now somewhat-iconic pink neon MSB signage. Owners Michael Forde and Paul Aron are responsible for it all, from the initial design to building.

But there is one big difference: there’s a whopping 450-square-metre dedicated baking space at the back of the building. Twice a day the staff delivers baked goods to all the MSB outlets and other clients in Perth. It may not be the original, but West Leederville has become the undisputed HQ for Mary Street Bakery.
