Owston Hotel Turns a Heritage Site in Fremantle Into a Locanda-Style Stay

“Do you have the key?”
Five words you do not want to hear immediately after you’ve locked, well, anything.
On this particular occasion, it was muttered in the reception area of the newly opened Owston Hotel, a boutique 11-room spot in Fremantle’s West End.
There was, as there often is in these situations, a series of emotions in quick succession: denial, optimism and blame. We check every pocket twice, retracing our steps back up the blue terrazzo staircase, and trading accusations about key custody.
This all happened around 7pm – fifteen minutes after reception had closed for the evening – but fortunately for us, nothing at the Owston operates in isolation.
Out of options, we accepted defeat and made the walk of shame down High Street to Ode to Sirens, the vinyl listening bar from the team behind the Owston, a few doors down the road.
Within minutes, the bar’s venue manager was walking us back through the West End, spare hotel key in hand, as though this were less an inconvenience and more part of the operating model.
Turns out it kind of is.
Owston takes its cues from the Italian locanda: a small neighbourhood hotel where the hospitality extends well beyond the front desk and into the surrounding streets. Here, that means guests are welcomed with a drink at Ode (we opted for two glasses of Greek white as the sun slipped behind Freo’s iconic Round House), breakfast comes courtesy of Common Bakery downstairs, and priority bookings at Vin Populi are folded into the experience. Crucially, it also means you can get into your room after hours if you’re as forgetful as we are.
Back upstairs, our High Street-facing room feels deeply connected to Fremantle. The space retains its heritage feel without leaning too heavily into nostalgia. The Federation-era bones remain intact, softened through Rezen Studio’s coastal palette of teal, sea glass and sun-faded blues that seem as if they’re lifted straight from Bathers Beach. Velvet armchairs, cork flooring and custom timber joinery add warmth, while archival references to Fremantle’s post-war European migrant communities subtly link the rooms to the neighbourhood outside.
The bathrooms carry the same playfulness with terrazzo vanities, patterned tiles, soft burgundy accents and even softer bath robes. Freshly roasted coffee from sister roaster Good Seeds Coffee is set up as a simple pour-over ritual on the bench, alongside freshly baked sweet treats courtesy of Common. But it’s the dramatic arched windows that keep pulling your attention outward, back onto High Street below.
That overlap between the hotel and the neighbourhood quickly becomes a defining feature of a stay at the Owston. Between the limestone heritage buildings occasionally accented with a perched gargoyle, and the dense mix of restaurants, cafes, galleries and boutiques all within walking distance, there’s a lot to explore. The Owston works best as a base from which to launch yourself into Fremantle’s particular orbit.
Of course, staying in the West End comes with its own soundtrack. Notre Dame students clutching Keep Cups gossip between lectures, delivery vans inch through narrow streets, and golden-hour drinkers spill onto the pavement. There are complimentary earplugs for lighter sleepers, though the noise never feels intrusive. Instead, it reinforces that you’re not hermetically sealed inside a hotel; rather, you’re staying in the heart of one of Perth’s buzziest neighbourhoods.
The Owston isn’t designed to contain its guests to their rooms. It welcomes you directly into the middle of Fremantle, then gently encourages you back out the door.
And if you do lock yourself out, chances are someone nearby already has the spare key.
Rates start from $280 per night. The writer stayed as a guest of Owston Hotel.
