What image comes to mind when you hear the words “lunch bar”? Probably dodgy food and plastic flaps for a door?

Grubb Hub redefines the term. Firstly, it’s got a door. Owners and best mates, Ashley Pibworth and Carlo Quiligotti, call their food “proper” in the British, Jamie Oliver sense of the word.

There’s tangy Thai beef salads, freshly made bagel-and-lox sandwiches and Moroccan chicken salads prepared by ex-Jamie’s Italian chef Peter Nunn. The banana bread and scones, however, are made by Quiligotti’s mum – a smart business move considering how fast they fly out the door.

Mornings are busiest at Grubb Hub. While the kitchen staff prepares lunches for delivery (they can be ordered online), the espresso machine gets a work out. Local office workers queue for the Grinders coffee (some say it’s a match for Architects & Heroes’, a block away) and linger round the fireplace in the courtyard, parked on oilcan seats, roasting marshmallows.

Can your local lunch bar offer that?
